In the US, wealth and political power go together like hand and glove. Our representative government sets the rules of our economy, and these rules determine how the wealth our economy creates is distributed among its citizens. In the Oppression Economy, the wealthy elite use purchased political power to manipulate those rules and hoard wealth. This wealth subjugates the political power of many people of color, and in turn weakens our constitutional right to change those rules. The Oppression Economy thrives from suppression of voting rights and democratic participation. Our pathway to a Liberation Economy rests in our ability to fully participate in our democracy and hold the elected officials who represent us accountable to pass laws that enhance income, wealth, and ultimately, power.
