Our Tax Code

Our economy will never truly be free until the rules of taxation work for–not against–people of color. Right now, complex loopholes created by our government for the ultra-wealthy and big corporations allow a select few to hoard wealth while our communities shoulder the cost. We’re working to unrig the system and flip the script.

What we are fighting for:

  • A new story for taxes. Taxes should fund the things that let each one of us thrive–housing, quality education, clean air, good jobs, and more–rather than padding corporate profits.
  • Clear villains, clear vision. We name who benefits from the Oppression Economy–wealthy elites and giant corporations–and we organize with our grassroots partners to hold them accountable.
  • Policies that build collective wealth and generational prosperity. From progressive income taxes to closing corporate loopholes, we back transformative reforms that reclaim dollars from private vaults and place them back in the hands of the public good.
  • Grassroots power, long-term plan. Over the next several years, we’re partnering with base-building groups to spark curiosity, provide political education, and fuel imaginative possibilities that make tax justice a kitchen-table issue.

Tax justice is a cornerstone of the Liberation Economy: it dismantles corporate power, funds the guarantees our communities deserve, and un-rigs the rules so people of color can live with dignity and abundance.

Out of $2T in expenditures that flow through the tax code, about $1.2T of these tax breaks fund twelve of the largest and most prominent tax programs that are supposed to bolster our incomes, help afford housing, start or maintain a business, support health care and education and family care, and allow us to pass on something to future generations. However, out of this $1.2T pot, 80% is going to white folks and wealthy folks.
